A completely new essay on the "Swallow" and "Amazon" from Arthur
Ransome's Swallows and Amazons is now online.

It is the most compete and detailed description of these boats
available. It includes three drawings of a recosntructed Swallow
and a sketch of the real Amazon.

This article is carefully written for those who do not have
a lot of experience with sail boats.

One drawing shows most of the named parts of the Swallow for those
who do not know a bobstay from a binnacle.

There is a glossary of boating terms including *all* the boating
terms used in Swallows and Amazons and Swallowdale. There is
also a section of good ideas for those starting into boating
for the first time.

There is a reference list for further reading on boat design
and construciton.

This essay is the result of over three years of casual
investigations.

I think we now have enough information to build a boat
very close indeed to the original Swallow. This article is
in the same place as useful material on boat building.

John Kohnen prepared all the html presentation, and publishes
the article, so he gets all credit for its web appearence.

Anyone sailing or building a boat very much like the Swallow,
please let me know. I am curious about her performance under
sail. I am building one, too, but not an exact reproduction.
