Yes, I'm afraid I found this passage very unconvincing when I first read it, and I still do. The children had already used the semaphore men to transmit messages between themselves, and they already knew that the leg positions of the characters were irrelevant. Once they'd realised the backwards sequence of letters didn't make sense, then the 'signpost' clue should have given them the answer within a couple of paragraphs....
