It was my 60th birthday yesterday (16th) and I received the Hardyment book, and wonderful it is too.
Congratulations for making it this far... 60... I can remember those far off days- well, if 13 years is far off. And yes, it is far off. All kinds of things have happened since, including re-reading my favourites from my row of green hardbacks. Looking at the drawings that I coloured in when I was officially still a child. Interestingly (for me) those favourites are the ones with the Ds. Past 70, I was able without shame to admit that I was in love with Dorothea. But then, secretly, isn't everybody?
I've also enjoyed Hardyment's books, unreservedly. It's good to feel the contact with a genuine fan who is also a good journalist and researcher and a good, spare writer. There are other AR books, too, and they are all excellent, splendid to dive into at intervals and emerge refreshed. Accompanied, I confess, by Glenn Miller, Goodman and just now by Charlie Parker. I guess I've just destroyed any AR-cred I might have had...
