It appears to be dismissed as not being sufficiently fantastic, or fairylike. It's a point of view- which I certainly wouldn't share. It depends on the child, and on the expectation of what children's fiction should be like.

This kind of thing goes in fashionable waves. Nowadays for instance, 'Alice in Wonderland' has long been appropriated by adult psychedelics. At the time of Milne's Pooh stories, much fiction writing was what we would now call fey. I suppose that we should call AR's work 'modern'. That's not something that everybody likes. But I do... And did as a child, as well.
