This may be a complete (uncooked) red herring but the cookbook my mother used around 1950 may have been Lydia Chatterton's Modern Cookery Illustrated which was first published in 1930. I've not found a photo of its dust-cover on-line but inside it had photographs of all sorts of fanciful dishes the ingredients for which were not available in post-war food-rationed Britain. I certainly remember seeing "joints of meat with paper frills" pictured.
