I think you're referring to 'The Cruise of the Alerte' in relation to PD, Alan -- at least that's where the Crab Island and treasure-search detail came from. (Although I seem to remember that in 'The Cruise of the Falcon' he did indeed mention "Crab Island" en passant, briefly but without detail.)
As you say, authors get their material from all over....
