I think that maybe he was feeling out of sorts; he was very often in pain from his stomach troubles, never really solved, and being ill can really make you crotchety. In addition, AR was of the generation for which the telephone had come as a sometimes intrusive surprise. He grew up in a time of letters and, at a pinch, telegrams. Your home really was your castle, and nobody could reach you or disturb you unheralded. The telephone changed all that, in the same way that the mobile phone has removed peace and quiet from bus journeys- once a time for contemplation, now a time to hear someone's life story shouted in Swahili.
I think it's a generational thing.
