I think both Peters are right: Ransome was often in pain and irritable, and we meet him at his best on the pages of the twelve.
Two stories that illustrate his attitude to children:
At Pin Mill shortly after the war, Ransome was approached by a young fan. Seeing Gill Busk on the hard he told the child, "There's Daisy. You go and ask her."
Gill, just out of uniform, did not feel the least like Daisy and was rather cross with Ransome.

As late as the summer of 1954 Ransome was still treating the children of his friends rather differently. When Rupert Hart-Davis brought his sons to visit "Lottie Blossom" they were welcomed by the hoisting of the Jolly Roger and given drinks aboard from a bottle marked "Grog".
