I had the same experience with Geoff Boycott (as a young Yorkshire cricket fan 30-odd years ago)!
Having said that, reading some of the things Geoff said to kids that had more guts than me, I was probably lucky to have stood their like a mute. He was putting his gear in his car and must have know I was there to see a hero, so if he was in the mood to say a few words to a fan he would have done, I guess.
I've met a few of my heroes over the years, and obviously sometimes it can be a bit of disappointment. I don't know what I'd have made from rudeness from AR (however unfair it might be to expect somebody to be polite to somebody invading their privacy, however well-intentioned) - I've always wanted to sort of BE Arthur Ransome (crossed with Ralph McTell) - it might have just made me be less polite to others from the on!
