Mike, I agree. At university (as a mature student in my thirties) I never marked library books, but saw plenty as you describe. These days I will either bookmark a page or make a list (in pencil) on one of the blank pages at the start or end of a book with page numbers and note of what I wanted to comment on. There are still some I would never mark (ARs of course!)
