My favourite has always been WH and can't imagine it changing.

I suspect that WH is favourite with more people than any other. At least, that is, with people who have read more than SA and SD. It was certainly mine, for years. It's paradoxically one of the warmest stories, and bringing in the Callums seems to have reenergised AR. It's the easiest book to like.

But a few years ago, my enjoyment switched to PM. I really enjoy the way AR brings together in sisterhood Nancy and the GA. I think that's one of his master strokes.

Having said that, I suspect that the best of the books is WD. The story is tremendous, the scale epic, the forging of the Swallows a stirring event. And it has my favourite sub-story, of Jim desperately breaking out of hospital and setting out to find his ship.

Isn't it splendid that we are spoiled for choice to find the best one?
