Oh a difficult question! My favourite book is usually the one I've just finished!

For many years I considered SD as my favourite. It was my introduction to S&A as my mother read it to me when I was 3 or 4. That same battered Cape edition is still around.
On reflection WD is top for me. It is a well crafted story with tension and some real danger and develops all the characters. I still, forty something years later, want to emulate John steering Goblin through the night.
Although I tended to identify with John, which is why I joined the navy, my second favourite is CC. It introduces a number of wonderful minor characters and boats that help to bring the period to life. Though the travels of Port and Starboard by wherry, motor launch and Thames barge would cause apoplexy to today.
