There is an irony in the views expressed on Tarboard about Buchan - the 'overseas' correspondents are defending him to the hilt, while we Brits have serious doubts about his views.

Just to make it clear; I don't object to Buchan's views, although I didn't like those expressed by some of his characters. It's just that I didn't enjoy his books very much. I suppose my favourite would be the film of 'The 39 steps', which I did enjoy.

It's the perpetual problem that crops up all the time. Authors are not their characters; being novelists they (gosh) make things up. And the better they do it, the more difficult it is to keep the difference in mind.
