Okay Peter, next question -- which film? The Robert Donat version (closest), or Kenneth More (rather distant), or Robert Powell (even more so), or the TV version with Rupert Penry-Jones?

The 'Thirty-Nine steps' has been just about done to death in my view, film-wise -- and it's by no means Buchan's best shocker anyway.

Don't let me start ranting....

(But do the English not like Buchan so much because he was in fact a Borderer, and so not really one of them? It always fascinates me that the English applaud Andy Murray only as long as he's winning, when of course he's a Brit -- but when he's not winning, he's just a Scot....)
