I would not have thought that Commander and Mrs Walker were 'cruel' parents. Of course, leaving home for the first time can be a cruel experience, but everyone has to leave home sooner or later and it might as well be got over with. I did not go to boarding school but I know plenty of people who did, and they mostly say that after a day or two at the school they got used to it and never looked back.
Children don't think about the 'class system' and all that stuff. Theirs is a different world. All I wanted was to be sent to a school where I was not beaten up every day. My parents eventually managed to do this, for which I am still grateful. On my first day at the new school I saw a boy sitting on a wall reading Swallowdale. I knew I'd be OK.
