At the same time, we are all very aware that the TarBoard community values the existing TarBoard user interface, functionality and experience

Just to say yes to that. There's a certain elegant simplicity in what is basically a text environment, with some image capabilities which need just enough effort to discourage trivial use...

It's like continuing to use Usenet (which I do for some few groups) when most of the original users I knew there have gone to Facebook- as I have too. Several of us still use both. But Usenet has a restfulness to it, precisely because of the absence of pictures, which works, I suspect, by putting off the people you'd quite like to put off.

This, of course, applies to nobody whatsoever here.

So yes, please, by all means change the ornament a bit, preferably keeping it simple. I do really value the ability to simply embed HTML commands, which makes Tarboard genuinely superior to almost any other system I use. But under the hood, anything goes. I read recently on Facebook (!) that when Arpanet was inaugurated as the first non-military WAN, it crashed during its first login... So we'll understand if the first days of the new system are... adventurous.
