Peter,
I think that you should be careful about posting very personal questions of this sort on TarBoard.

To answer your question on behalf of myself not Peter C., my father worked overseas and so I was sent to boarding school (as he had been when his father worked in India). This was not an uncommon choice and not based on cruelty but perceived necessity and custom. Many, if not most, children had no significant problem with being away from home at a boarding school.

I, personally, did not have a good experience at my first boarding school and I do think that it was a bit cruel to me, but I do not think my parents were cruel to inflict it on me. There can be unconscious cruelty, especially as I, along with some others, never complained about the experience. I was just quietly unhappy for a number of years.

My two brothers had no such difficulties and were completely happy at boarding school as far as I know.
