Not at all. The point there is that until I was 14 I'd been a day boy. When I went to be a boarder, I could fairly handle things. But other children were sent to boarding school from the age of seven or eight- and that was definitely cruel in my book. Horrific in fact.
Some children could handle it at that age, but many were marked for life. However, it was a tradition, not sufficiently challenged. There are lots of those.
