Peter C - this is my thinking. I learnt syllogism at school, and this is how I apply it:
"the special cruelty of the English middle classes" = the English middle classes are cruel.
I am a member of the English middle classes, therefore it logically follows that according to Peter C I am cruel.
You say you weren't referring to any particular person - ah, but that's the problem - you were referring to everybody, i.e. all of us. I do realise that you have strong political views, but if you make sweeping generalisations on this board then other people get caught up in them and misunderstandings occur. Why not be like AR and give your politics as "fishing" !
