Certainly for the Oxford & Cambridge Joint Board Chemistry O level syllabus for 1958, both quantitative and qualitative analysis were included in the practical section.

Remember my father, who was a chemist, saying that this syllabus was easy and it had been more difficult for matriculation in his day. This would have equated to Dick’s era. To my mind that ability to handle concentrated acids when testing for gold is somewhat brave for his age.

Even so, 12ish would be an early start, would have thought 14 would be more appropriate. It may well be with the major decline in educational attainment over the years, that this topic is now included in the A level syllabus.
