This story has rather disappeared into the mists, but in 1994 Jill Goulder, of TARS, was encouraged by Taqui to go to look for the Altounyan summer house (now in Turkey), described in In Aleppo Once. Jill signed me up to join in the expedition, and it is described in the postscript to the reprint of the book issued by Amazon Publications (an offshoot of TARS) in 2001, as well as in TARS' Mixed Moss journal in 1994.
We had tremendous encouragement from Taqui and Brigit, and they put us in touch with Susie in France, who supplied some of their family snapshots from the 1930s to help us identify sites.
On our return, we gave a talk at a TARS meeting (organised by Roger Wardale). Taqui, Brigit and John came down to Bognor for it.
So I have achieved two things beyond my wildest dreams:
- I have spoken to Mate Susan on the phone;
- and I have had the Ship's Baby to stay at my house.
