A check on the Manchester Guardian of 1912 shows that they noted on May 14 that they had received from Stephen Swift Ltd “A Night in the Luxembourg” with a preface and appendix by Arthur Ransome, cost 5s; also Hilaire Belloc on the Battle of Waterloo (one of his British Battles series for Swift) and Tripoli and Young Italy by Charles Lapwood.

The Times of 1912 has no mention of the book, but there is a letter in The Times of 24 January 1912 from Arthur Ransome of Bournemouth on “Retrograde Sanitation”; he says that the regulations for Cotton Factories made under the Factories and Workshops Act 1911 are a “crime against the laws of health” and will lead to a deterioration in the health of operatives rather than an improvement, with various calculations on air quality & CO2.

PS the local university (Victoria Universirty of Wellington) has a copy of the Swift edition of “A Night in the Luxembourg” but it is kept off-site so I cannot wander in and look at it. I think pirated American editions was a problem at the time as America had not signed international copyright conventions, though it was possible to simultaneously publish in Canada to get protection under inter-American copyright agreements.
