Does it actually say they're from London anywhere? I can't remember the reference. I recall the assumption (from Susan) that they were brought up in a town. I had even wondered whether Professor Callum might have been at the Yorkshire College in Leeds (although I can't picture an ice rink near there) or Manchester. The later train journeys do seem to challenge that idea (although not if they'd gone off to boarding schools by then) - of course there is also the possibility that AR didn't know which university/school, etc. it was either... I always assume that AR had all the unwritten stuff sorted too (it usually feels that way with the geography, for example) but some of the back stories might have been a tad flexible.
