I was exploring my access to NETFLIX and came across a
NOVA TV show called "Secrets Of The Viking Sword." It
went into detail as to the smelting of the iron and
carbon to first make the steel, then the creating of
a steel ingot which was then pounded into the shape of
a sword of exceptional qualities.

What really got my attention was the extremely high
heat needed to produce the steel ingot in a clay
crucible. This container was "cooked" in a furnace
that rather well seemed very much like the furnace
that Dick created in Pigeon Post in his attempt to
produce a gold ingot. The source of the heat was a
large amount of charcoal. It even used the bellows to
pump air in at the bottom, a job that took hours of
considerable labor to complete. I have to believe
that Dick would have really enjoyed seeing this show.

I suggest that if you want to see Dick's furnace
actually work, then check out this presentation.

This hour long TV show is available on a DVD, but
finding it on NETFLIX was a much cheaper method.

On the Internet, search for "ULFBEHT SWORD" for
more info about this Viking technology.
