Here's a data point.
The trouble is there are so many data points... The car scale would make AR's £67,000 worth about 1.7 million today. When we bought a house in '67, three bedroom semi-d, it cost us £5,750. I looked up the current prices, and it would be just over a million quid. Making AR's estate worth 11 million quid. But then that's house prices in London, and by definition, bonkers.
I still reckon the RPI index is probably the best measure. Just under a million. So after his lifetime's very successful writing, he could just about have bought the room he lived in when he wrote 'Bohemia in London'. But after all, he'd have been handy for the King's Road.
