Surely, assemblage applies to every location in any novel? We've been talking about that here all the time, sometimes under another name, but that's what it is... Even the Dog's Home, which appears to be, from present day photos and AR's illustration, as near to a stone-by-stone description as you can get, is placed in an invented place?

This is in no way to play down the value and the fun of looking for the elements AR fused, but presumably a valley with a stream through it, with a cave, a waterfall at the top and a rock slide to give Roger an experience that AR had as a boy, and produce a nice bit of business for the book, doesn't have to be real in any way. Except in AR's head.

Presumably there will be, among the hundreds of valleys and gulches around the Lakes, (or even in Russia, or now we can see them, on Mars, but AR not being Dr Who, that's ruled out) some that will provide features that can be assembled to make the setting for the story. Good luck finding them...

It seems to me that the Broads stories depend on the specific locations, to a much greater degree than the Lakes stories, which are more about what the childrens' imaginations make of the place, so there the places may be described with greater accuracy. And of course SW is actually about discovering and describing the location, more than anything else, so you'd expect the description in the book to be a good fit. Which it is.
