The speed of light is of course 186,000 miles/second. (If you want it in metric you'll need to do the conversion yourself...) For me, that's always been an easy sort of number to remember, like there being 365 days in a year, or that 16 squared is 256. Some things just stick.

But I agree with the original thesis -- AR taught me to sail too, though I didn't get to practise it in a proper boat for some forty-odd years. (I did sail my kayak from my teenagerhood, but mastery of a kayak depends on the use of paddles rather than sails, so I hardly count that.) As others have said, AR taught you things in such a way you didn't know you were learning, or even that you had learnt after the event....
