Like many others I learnt a lot of the theory of sailing from reading S&A long before I set foot in a sailing boat. Most of what he says is as true today as it was 60 years ago.
However there is one area which has changed, and that is sound signals in restricted visibility. In the chapter Blind Man's Bluff in PD Wild Cat and Viper use different signals are given depending on the point of sailing. Today Rule 35 of IRPCS specifies that a vessel under sail always sounds one long blast followed by two short (morse D) at least every two minutes.
