Oh dear, I didn't mean to cause any panic!

Whenever I have researched bunloaf, the 'dark' type is the only sort I have discovered. (I only iced it for fun, because it was Christmas; I know the books do not mention icing!)

So if there is a 'light' sort too, then that does sound as if it could be the S&A version, since the Swallows definitely spread marmalade on it on one occasion. Can anyone tell me how dry that version is? Could you eat it alone, without butter?

I think we need some deeper research. As I mentioned, my recipe came from a North West (England) family, and was established in that form throughout the 1930s. Several websites also suggest the Cumbrian/Manx coastlines favour the dark fruit cake with lots of spices in.

The jury is still out!
