That looks like the same recipe as this one from the Isle of Man/Cumbria via the Daily Mail. They even include the Swallows and Amazons reference.
However, the one I recall was definitely a bread with dried fruit in it, not a cake. I think the recipe may even be buried somewhere in the old TarBoard archives from Ian E-N's days.
