The '63 series was my first introduction to the world of Ransome and I was quite bowled over by it. I had no pre-conceptions when I viewed it. Despite the adjustments made it is full of the spirit of the books. It started my life-long admiration for the works. I know AR was not very impressed with the production, but I think by that stage of his life he'd become rather grumpy.
I was quite disappointed by the 74 film, as it skips the climactic storm on the island scene and I found Ronald Fraser totally lacking as Capt Flint. His character is fundamental to the story and he has to appear rather fearsome. The '63 Amazons also displayed a lot more mischievous spirit than their '74 counterparts.
Like Owen Roberts I would love to have the chance to see it as a mature adult and re-assess it, and enjoy it on its own level.
