I knew I had read an AR quote about bunloaf outside of the S&A series, and finally I have found it! From his 1906 series of little nature books, there is a mention in The Child's Book of the Seasons which you can read online in plain HTML or in a large PDF.

And we help them to unload the baskets, which are full of food and drink. Great big slices of bunloaf, dark and full of soft, juicy raisins, and tea, the best tea you ever tasted, for tea never tastes so nice as when you drink it under a hedge and out of a ginger beer bottle.

This makes me feel better about the DARK bunloaf I cooked.
However, it doesn't square with the S&A quote where they have marmalade on it (implied). Perhaps AR had eaten both sorts of bunloaf?!
