It is a merrier Christmas than I feared

At 11.03 am this Christmas morning, our lights suddenly came on again after 87 hours of power cut in Toronto caused by an ice storm on Saturday evening. The house was as cold as the inside of most people's fridges and we slept well wrapped up and running the taps at intervals to prevent freezing. During the day we did get out a bit to warm up but it was a nasty experience for those of us used to constant electricity and central heating. It was made worse by the -10 C temperatures in the last few days.
The house is still warming up and I am not nostalgic for the days of candles but would have liked an open fire or kitchen stove which was always on during the last few days. The other problem was the radio kept telling us to check various websites or Twitter. However, even our smart phones couldn't connect to the internet when the local cell tower was out of service. No phones, no email, only the letter carrier made it through and Canada Post is planning to scrap the door to door delivery over the next few years to save money.
