Presumably that demonstrates the notional ubiquity of smartphones, as there might be a base tower within range that still has power- and of course, still enough charge in the smartphone...
Do smartphones make a big difference in small boat navigation? I keep thinking of the 'Wild Cat's sail down channel in PD, with its superb and loving description of navigating from light to light, which was always my favourite part of that book. Nowadays I suppose they would carry a GPS set, but failing that, would a smartphone be any use along the coast?
