I know there is mobile phone coverage across the Solent (between mainland and Isle of Wight), but I am not sure how far offshore it reaches elsewhere in the English Channel.
Most yachts have a GPS system with its own satellite receiver, and charts that display on a screen (even an iPad) but sailors with any sense also carry paper charts, keep a careful log, and have a book which reminds them how to use their sextant!
