Interesting point, but what's your reasoning for him being 50?
If Nancy is 12, then her mother is in her mid 30s, so Captain Flint is going to be a bit a few years older (being her brother) which makes him at most in his late 30s or early 40s, but then again he could be younger than her. Which might make him just old enough to have served in the Great War.
This is just my first thoughts, and have not had time to do the research!
