I have always judged Captain Flint's age from the great Matterhorn climb of 1901. There is something about Jim's relationship with Molly to suggest that he is the elder. Possibly she was the young sister climbing with Bob Blackett and Jim, who were around 15 at that time? Much older than that and the imaginative game would have been unlikely.
