There was a book, published in the 70s/80s, the title of which sadly I cannot recall, but which contained accounts of at least half a dozen Englishmen who emerged from various obscure parts of the world to learn that the Great War had taken place and they had not heard. One of them had been in South America from the start of 1914. He returned to London in 1919 having heard nothing. For some it took several years for the news to reach them, and they determined to enlist. One of these, a former soldier in the South African war, rushed home, arriving just in time for the Armistice. Give Capt Flint's South American connexions, it is just feasible.
