Following on the idea of the Amazons' occasional beret wear, I tried to find if there was any evidence to support my theory that the beret was a WWII introduction. I looked up in a book 'Childhood Memories', which gave the uniform list and prices for Cheltenham Ladies College, Wycombe Abbey and Roedean, Rugby and Sherborne for 1929.
Cheltenham required 1 blue hat for the winter and 1 grey hat for the summer at 7/6 each (37p)
Roedean required a black velour hat (winter), a panama hat and a linen hat for summer. (no price) Wycombe Abbey also required two hats. The Rugby list was very much shorter!
Certainly not conclusive, but an indication?
By the way, does anyone know what sandshoes were? Google suggested they were sandals and AR drew them as if they were short boots.
