What I wore all summer in the 1950s. Lace-up shoes with rubber soles and coarse canvas uppers, usually in natural color, sometimes with rubber toe-caps. Excellent non-skid surface for scrambling about on rocks. Also then known as "tennis-shoes" though these would be white.
