Exactly as Tom described.
In English school equipment parlance they were usually know as plimsolls - always used in the gymnasium otherwise either socks of bare feet (frowned on because of the prevalence of foot rot) had to suffice.
Better quality with thicker soles and some ankle support were know as tennis shoes.
When I holidayed in Northern Ireland they were known as "Gutties" named after gutta-percha which was harder rubber alternative.
Expect there are other local names for these canvas sand shoes.
I think they have now evolved into the ubiquitous “trainer”.
