In English school equipment parlance they were usually know as plimsolls - always used in the gymnasium otherwise either socks of bare feet (frowned on because of the prevalence of foot rot) had to suffice.
When I was at school in Somerset plimsolls were always called daps, and I hadn't heard the word plimsoll until we moved to Hampshire.
