Interesting how English usage changes, at the time of writing AR referred to stockings meaning socks (a garment for boys and girls) now of course the usage is entirely different!

As for ties, I have a photograph of my late brother when we visited Stonehenge in 1959/60 standing by one of the stones - in full school uniform (we were going on holiday in the west country.) My parents were probably middle-class, but dressing so never happened at home. Once school was over the uniform was changed out of to preserve it!
