The Wiki for 'stocking cap' fundamentally says it applies to knitted caps, with a variety of styles. From what I remember when I was small, that's basically right. The point being that a beret isn't usually knitted. My father used to wear those a lot- a 'beret Basque' he used to call it.
So it does look as though the S&As wore both, at different times.
