It seems like madness today, but in the very cold winter of 1947 I wore shorts — all boys of primary school age did. I recall that at grammar school, boys in the first year wore shorts but most arrived for their second year wearing 'longs'.
In the 1990s, as a concession to cold weather, we allowed girls to wear trousers instead of skirts to school, but not in the classrooms.
Nowadays, locally, 'longs' are worn by boys and girls, with the girls having the option to wear a skirt.
