Titty and Roger are rushed upstairs by Susan to "get your things changed" and into "camping clothes" when they arrive at Beckfoot (PP2). Hearing Squashy Hat’s hobnailed boots, Roger recalled that the S&As wear rubber soles as John when he was younger than Roger had said "you never know when you may get the chance of going aboard somebody’s boat" (PP12). Dot and Peggy wear “sandshoes” when Dot makes the footprints that Samy finds under the tree (PM21). The Swallows & Ds sometimes wear wide-brimmed sunhats (eg Dot & ?? at the Pigeon Loft, PP4) but are often bare-headed.
Of course Captain Flint is “dreadfully smartly dressed” for the GA (SD20).
Re New Zealand school dress, we wore a cap, jersey and grey flannel shorts with long socks with garters at Wellington College, Wellington in the 1950s; including the hairy-legged sixth and upper sixth form boys. A blazer and grey slacks for sports day only. Now many NZ secondary schools do not have uniforms, and those that do often let the sixth & seventh forms wear mufti.
