Apparently they have been on the Exe estuary in Devon (heard about that yesterday morning), and just before Christmas one was on the lake at Paper Court Sailing Club near Ripley in Surrey. According to the ornithologist who told me, they often stop over on the reservoirs near Staines, so you might be lucky and see one without having to go to Scotland or Canada!
