A picture of my father in school uniform c 1912 shows him wearing boots. This was probably not untypical at the time.
This type of boot would be ideal for screwing skates as in WH as well as providing some snow protection.
Not sure what Roger was wearing when he turned his ankle in SD, but he might have been better protected if he had been wearing proper boots.
Children or their parents actually tried to maximise wear from footwear and clothing before they grew out of them. This carried on until we all became "richer" in the 1960's. I remember one friend who took the studs out of his rugby boots to continue wearing them - as he knew they would not fit in the following year.
