One or two postings have commented on the absence of mention of AR in recent TV programmes about the English Lake District. This absence does not surprise me in the least. I think we should beware of assuming that AR is some sort of local hero or VIP in what is now Cumbria. If you travel round the area you will find very little mention of him. You will find mention of John Ruskin of course, and Alfred Wainwright – his books are in all the shops, and the name of Beatrix Potter is commemorated in the Beatrix Potter Gallery and Hill Top House at Hawkshead. To discover any public mention of AR, you have to delve deep into the display galleries of the Abbot Hall Museum in Kendal. TV programme makers rarely pick up on this.
Forgive the plug, but an organisation which is trying to remedy this situation is ART (Arthur Ransome Trust), whose eventual aim is to establish an AR Centre in the south of the Lake District, in order to carry out our motto “Put Ransome on the Map”. It is going to take time, and we need help. Please have a look at our website - http://www.arthur-ransome-trust.org.uk, which explains further.
