I don't believe it is a typo, but rather an obsolete usage. I am elderly, and I can remember many years ago people would say, if they knew you were interested in e.g. certain types of reading, "I'll look out some books for you". It meant "pick out" or "search for". In the example given in PP, Dick is searching through Nancy's semaphore code in his pocket book to identify each letter. The Times English Dictionary still gives this meaning.
